So, welcome to the Hungry Corner! We are here to help you with the traditional taste. Without delay, let's dive into the topic. Tea is an important drink of every Indian Family. It is also called "Tea" in English while "Chaha" in Marathi.
In India, tea has a reserved place in the get-together, family functions, marriages, or even on dates. There are various jokes on a tea-like "Jithe Tea Tithe me", "Cutting Chai" or "Tea changes from Bitter to Better", etc. Also, in all sectors, there is the concept of "Tea-Break" which means there is 15 min break where employees go for tea and discuss anything.
Let's know the History of Tea
In 1935 the British East India Company established tea farms in Assam in an attempt to change the overwhelming Chinese monopoly on tea supply to Great Britain. In 1870 approximately 90% of tea consumed in Great Britain was supplied by China but by 1900 this had reduced to 10% largely replaced by tea sourced in India and Ceylon.
However, consumption of tea within India remained low until an aggressive promotional campaign by the (British-owned) Indian Tea Association in the early 20th century, which encouraged factories, mines, and textile mills to provide tea breaks for their workers. It also helped many independent chai-walas throughout the railway system.
From the 1830s black tea was gradually assimilated into the existing Chai spice mix, and the origins of Chai as we know it now appeared. However, the tea spice mix lacked demand due to the high cost of tea and wasn’t popular until the 1900s when a hardcore movement by the India Tea Company publicized the provision of ‘tea breaks’ for workers to increase tea sales.
